Many moons ago during the B.R. era (Before Russ), back in the early days of this podcast with Adam, we took on The 1st Four of The Big 4, taking a look at each of the debut albums from Anthrax, Megadeth, Metallica, and Slayer, respectively.

 

To take that episode a step further (and to add a slight twist to the original premise), we thought it might be fun (and a bit of a challenge) to attempt to identify which tracks would be considered the DEEP CUTS from The First Four albums of EACH of The Big Four thrash bands.

#281 - Ozzy Diary of a Madman Album Review

DIARY OF A MADMAN, the 2^nd album from OZZY OSBOURNE (and his band, BLIZZARD OF OZZ) is a perfect example of how an artist’s follow-up album often eclipses their debut outing. With a heftier mix and heavier riffs, darker lyrical themes & eerie gothic metal elements, and of course the disturbingly graphic album artwork, DIARY represents a quantum leap forward for “The Prince Of Darkness”, combining each of the aforementioned components into one of the darkest and heaviest metal albums ever to have emerged from 1981.

Just to be 100% TRANSparent, this is NOT an officially sanctioned “Chronicles” episode. However, it is the time of year for the TRANS-Siberian Orchestra (featuring the “Savatage Brothers”) and we felt compelled by the power of the holiday season to delve into the realm of HAIR METAL and reflect back on one of the least desirable (yet often most satisfying) subgenres of metal alongside memories of poon from the days of yore with the kinds of girls you would “meet once at a party and never talk to again”. Really, the entire objective of hair metal was to give actual metal heads an “in” to attaining money, drugs, and (especially) poon back in the day.

#278 DIO Last In Line Album Review

“I’m sorry, what was that? What was the last thing you said?”

 

Forty years ago this year (specifically, July 2, 1984), DIO (the man and the band) released THE LAST IN LINE, the follow up to their 1983 debut and the first album to feature full time keyboardist Claude Schnell. Forty years later, it still maintains its relevance throughout the realms of metal, especially when compared (relatively speaking) with music from 40 years prior to 1984!

 

Think about the music from 40 years before 1984. There is absolutely NO WAY anyone was listening to Bing Crosby ANYWHERE in 1984! Yet, in 2024, it is still a perfectly plausible concept and is totally socially acceptable to be blasting THE LAST IN LINE while riding around, “shooting hoops”, or annoying everyone while fueling up at the gas station.

 

Remember that the investment in hibachi is always worth it (because it’s delicious) and everyone could use “a good tongue lashing” on their birthday. #277 WE SOLD OUR SOUL FOR THRASH

WE SOLD OUR SOUL FOR THRASH is like the perfect blending of our Building The Perfect Thrash Album Vol. 1 episode from 2 years ago (Dec 8, 2022 to be exact) along with our We Sold Our Soul For Sabbath episode from March of 2024, with some ever so slight nuances to help keep things interesting.

 

As with our previous episodes which focused on various thrash bands from the days of yore (specifically the Top 10 Thrash Albums…And Then Some and Thrash Story Core episodes from way back in 2019, the Thrash Metal History (’81 to ’87) episode from 2020, our Obscure Thrash episode from April 2021, and the most recent, our Thrash Family Tree episode from January 2024), we just decided to dig into our collective memory banks and pull up the bands and the tunes that help to make us feel more alive…sort of like the feeling “when a breeze blows past your bone”.

 

Similar to the above referenced thrash-centric episodes, the majority of the songs we discussed are by old school thrash bands we grew up with, many of which have “grown up” themselves and are still crushing, destroying, and head banging away to this very day worldwide.

 

Also note that, unlike We Sold Our Soul For Sabbath, this is not our version of a “thrash greatest hits” album (although it could certainly qualify as part of a multi-volume “Best of Thrash” box set). There were no repeats, and a few surprise choices that would have made us wet ourselves had we had access to it back in the day. There’s no voting, there’s no ranking, we’re simply indulging in one of the greatest genres of metal ever to exist.

 

Prepare to behold another horrifying example of “vomit cuisine” after fixing yourself a heaping helping of “ham salad”, discover why “newd” is better than “all dressed” (especially when it comes to “slider buns”), learn why “the head game” is a good barometer for “the main course and the dessert” and worry not, because this episode is (for the most part) NOT “gonna end up being about roast beef sandwiches”.

#276 TOOL Ænima Album Review

AENIMA, the 1996 album from progressive metal shamans TOOL, is a progressive, heavy, and atmospheric album loaded with layers and layers of sonic texture that should be enjoyed with headphones to ensure the ideal experience. In short, if Tool is the metal community’s Pink Floyd, then AENIMA is most definitely their Dark Side Of The Moon. And as with any prog album of such incredible quality, you must listen to it “front to back”, in its entirety because it’s truly a “start to finish” experience.

 

You may recall that we did an album dive of this many, many moons ago, right around the time of the COVID pandemic, during the “B.R.” period. It was a Metal Nerdery two-some, it was done over a Zoom call, it was definitely weird, and it was the only time we ever “did it” with only “two thirds the nerds” (it’s episode 38, released April 2, 2020, btw. You’ve been warned).

 

Always remember to reach “Finger…knuckle…elbow…and shoulder deep inside the borderline” in order to properly clean out and prepare for your upcoming “analectomy”. Prepare to enjoy “The BALLS of satan” (“Und keine eier”), enjoy some reflections regarding ample “shoulder tits” that were shown “at a bar”, and a bunch of assorted “piss hockey snot” associated with “where rich people live (and eat) in Atlanta”.

 

Be advised that “white people rapping is kinda like girls talking about football” and remember that a hilariously, weird threesome is always better than an unfunny, awkward twosome.

#273 CONCERT REVIEW - KING DIAMOND & OVERKILL

On Friday, October 25^th, 2024, we traveled to The Eastern in Atlanta, Georgia for the Saint Lucifer’s Hospital 1920 Tour to see KING DIAMOND & OVERKILL (LIVE!) in concert, and it was everything we wanted and expected it to be: A perfect venue without a bad spot in the house, incredibly killer bands with album perfect production and sound, and absolutely ZERO traces of “party gravy” to be found anywhere on the premises.

 

Regrettably, we missed show opener NIGHT DEMON because we had to drive “from South Carolina” through Atlanta traffic to get to the venue and the start time of the show was far earlier than we expected, as opposed to back in the day when it was “doors open at 8, show starts at 2:30 am”. 

 

We have an “UPDATE” from a previous episode regarding “every married man’s fantasy”. It’s time to give some serious thought to the “health trade-off /upgrade dilemma”, because “you know what they say about the 39-year-olds” (“the younger they are, the better they taste”), which is exactly why “you’ve gotta work out and stay in shape” as you get older and JOIN US for a review of KING DIAMOND’s Saint Lucifer’s Hospital 1920 promotional tour (in support of the upcoming new studio album, “The Institute”), featuring OVERKILL and NIGHT DEMON, and find out why it will be worth every penny.
