“Today is all about 7’s…”
We can’t believe it…it’s officially been SEVEN years since we began our podcasting journey, and as of this episode, we are celebrating SEVEN years of heavy metal podcasting excellence! And in the spirit of heavy metal greatness, what better way to celebrate and commemorate the completion of our SEVENTH year than a tribute to the best thing MTV ever did for metal heads that started way back in the late 80’s: HEADBANGERS BALL!!!
“It was the novelty, because that was the only place where you could get it…”
Premiering on Saturday April 18, 1987, MTV began what would become a weekly Saturday night tradition and/or ritual for metal heads with HEADBANGERS BALL, the one section of MTV that belonged to the metal community…it was OUR show, OUR music, and OUR videos, made by metal heads for metal heads (ironically, not unlike this podcast).
“SEVEN!”
Granted, there were often a lot of glam and hair metal videos mixed in, but there were always a plethora of obscure thrash, power metal, and other assorted heavy metal videos on there that you absolutely could not see anywhere else on MTV except for when you tuned in to “The Ball” (NOTE: this is where the crochety “back in my day” sentiment comes into play because, as everyone with access to the internet knows, in the late 80’s, rock radio sure as hell wasn’t doing much to promote metal artists, and we certainly didn’t have Spotify or YouTube at our disposal. “The Ball” was all we had…mark the time.).

“Would it be fair to say that horror metal and death metal are kinda…symbiotic?”
Released May 25, 1987, SCREAM BLOODY GORE, the debut album from Florida death metal pioneers DEATH, marks a dark and transformative turning point from thrash metal into something else…something with “thrash overtones” that “sounds like thrash” but also doesn’t. While it seemed to be the next logical evolutionary step for extreme metal, we weren’t exactly sure what it was. It was still thrashy, yet there was a much darker presence to it than the thrash to which we were accustomed.
“They don’t have the cookie monster vocals, which is kinda nice…”
As it turns out, when you mix in the violent themes of horror movies like ‘Evil Dead’ with the sonic intensity of thrash metal, you end up with death metal, the genre which Chuck Schuldiner and DEATH helped establish in the mid 1980’s, putting Florida on the map as the death metal capital of the world.

“I wonder how many modern bands still do it?”
Maybe the song is named after the band and referenced in the chorus. Maybe the song is named after the band but there’s no reference to the band’s name anywhere in the lyrics. Or maybe it’s a song with a completely different title than the band name BUT the band name IS mentioned somewhere in the lyrics.
“They mostly do it during their early years…”
Whatever the case may be, A METAL BAND’S TITLE TRACK ultimately becomes the cornerstone of a band’s sound and their overall mission statement and objective (especially when they’re young and just starting out).

“If you were gonna be a stripper…what would your stage name be?”
When you think about 1986, it’s almost hard to fathom that we are 40 years away from it. Four decades away from perhaps THE biggest year in metal, and we’re not just saying that because we were still young and impressionable, but because it was quite literally THAT epic of a year!
March, September, and October of 1986 gave us Master of Puppets, Peace Sells… (But Who’s Buying?), and Reign In Blood (respectively), and that’s only 3 albums of thrash greatness from that year!
There was also the (now classic) documentary “Heavy Metal Parking Lot”, showing a bunch of young metal heads pre-gaming for a Judas Priest show. And of course you had “Crossroads”, the favorite guitar movie of young fledgling woodshedding shredders who would become obsessed at mastering Eugene’s bag of tricks in order to conquer the dark fretboard sorcery of one Jack Butler.
Basically, when it comes to 1986 and metal, “everything that was good came out that year”, and now, over 14,000 days later, 1986 is still being celebrated and lauded as one of the biggest landmark years in all of metal, especially on this podcast!

“You like to hear how they have progressed or digressed…or either…or gressed…”
This episode is a lot like looking at pictures of family when everyone is much younger and then looking at recent pictures of family and realizing that after enough time, a LOT changes.
Just as people grow and age and (hopefully) evolve over time, no artist should currently be EXACTLY as they were when they first started, as there should be an obvious evolution and progression of their style and sound over multiple albums and decades, from their very FIRST to their very LAST.
“I’m liking how this is going…we could do this for hours…”
Prepare yourself for THE FIRST AND THE LAST, a snapshot in time from the killer opener on the very first album to the killer closer on the very last (or in some cases, most recent) album; basically it’s the very first from the very first paired with the very last from the very last.

“If you’re gonna pick an album that’s supposed to be the album of the decade…”
The Grammy’s have proven over and over to metal fans over the years that their decisions are (more often than not) completely arbitrary and have absolutely zero basis in honor, truth, or reality whatsoever. And if you need to be reminded of this irrefutable fact, just remember who won the Grammy for “Best Metal Performance” in 1989.
“This was a little difficult and it was the first time…and there was no science behind this…”
Every award show, whether it’s The Grammy’s for the music industry or The Emmy’s for the acting industry, seems to be nothing more than some random selection of whatever artist is deemed popular or worthy enough by an elite few individuals to receive such an esteemed and prestigious award, based on nothing more than pure speculation and industry favoritism.
Well, we’ve decided that it’s OUR turn to do the same for metal. Because “it’s OUR award to give…”
With that, we proudly present to you The Inaugural Bunkerpoon Awards for Excellence in Metal, to be known henceforth as THE POONYs, an awards show where WE decide (based on our own personal experience and metal knowledge) which artist is worthy of our own, self-important seal of approval, honor, and recognition.
Ultimately, we hope that THE POONY AWARDS will become an event of prestigious accolades and glory that everyone in the metal community will attend with greater and greater anticipation and excitement.
And given that this is our very first ever POONY AWARDS, we have to start with the decade that has defined everything in metal up to this point: The 1970’s. Understand that with this being our very first ever (ahem, “inaugural”) awards show that the logistics behind our nomination process might seem a bit clunky (and, again, completely random, which is “why those awards shows take so long…”), but this is OUR take and OUR nominations for the artist that will receive the coveted POONY Award for THE NUMBER 1 HEAVY METAL ALBUM OF THE 1970’S.

Loaded with scathing social commentary against the modern philistine monsters of our time, GOLIATH is sure to get the blood & adrenaline pumping and the fists & heads banging with revolutionary glee and righteous vengeance. Amidst all the thrashing, there are also a multitude of brutally heavy moments, shredding twin guitar harmonies, melodic riffs with power metal overtones, and even a string arrangement that, while a bit different than anything they’ve recorded previously, is still 100%, unapologetically EXODUS.
