#327 DEATH MATCH: Puppets vs Justice Side 2
Thursday Nov 20, 2025
Thursday Nov 20, 2025
“Those guys are parents to 2 babies…and we’re fighting over which baby is cuter…”
With SIDE 2 of our PUPPETS VS JUSTICE HEAD-TO-HEAD DEATH MATCH, things are a bit trickier, because the math doesn’t sync up perfectly track for track. But not to worry, because we worked out all the math to try and keep things as “Even Steven” as possible.
“You go to the peak of your ability…that’s what Justice was…it was their Hemispheres…”
As we noted previously on the SIDE 1 episode, PUPPETS represents the end of the Cliff Burton era, and JUSTICE represents the beginning of the Jason Newsted era. On SIDE 2, we got deeper into the weeds, particularly with regard to the lyrical subject matter, the style and structure of the songs, and the personal impact and perspective of the instrumentals. We’re not saying that this was a complete blowout, and we’re not saying that the outcome was predictable by any means, but what we ARE saying is that the final verdict was actually a bit more shocking than we originally anticipated.
“What are they saying, dude?”
Stick around until the very end of the episode to discover the power of “frontmasking” after you JOIN US for the nail-biting conclusion to our PUPPETS VS JUSTICE HEAD-TO-HEAD DEATH MATCH as we take on SIDE 2.

#326 DEATH MATCH: Puppets vs Justice Side 1
Thursday Nov 13, 2025
Thursday Nov 13, 2025
“How about we let the producer ‘produce’?”
We’ve all heard that METALLICA’s “last great album” was 1986’s haunting thrash metal magnum opus, MASTER OF PUPPETS, one of the finest moments in the band’s catalog and the final studio album of “The First Three” to feature Cliff Burton on bass.
“I don’t care if there’s no bass…I’m sorry…”
We’ve also all heard (especially since the release of The Black Album) that METALLICA’s “last great album” was 1988’s progressive thrash metal tour de force, …AND JUSTICE FOR ALL, the fourth METALLICA studio album overall and the first (of four) to feature Jason Newsted on bass (according to the liner notes, anyway).
“The bass is the LAST thing I listen to…”
Having said that, BOTH are outstanding and powerful albums for very different reasons, with PUPPETS marking the haunting, final chapter of Cliff Burton’s legacy with what many fans consider to be the classic, legendary era of the band, and JUSTICE beginning a brand new chapter for the band with Jason Newsted, launching METALLICA into a new era that would ultimately result in their meteoric rise to success and glory as the biggest and most popular heavy metal band on planet earth.
“Y’all are gonna abuse me for using this word…”
JOIN US for a HEAD-TO-HEAD DEATH MATCH that promises to be absolutely “creamy” and chock full of 80’s metal nostalgia and loads of heated commentary as we take on SIDE ONE with 1986’s MASTER OF PUPPETS & 1988’s …AND JUSTICE FOR ALL.

#325 NATIVITY IN BLACK: A TRIBUTE TO BLACK SABBATH
Thursday Nov 06, 2025
Thursday Nov 06, 2025
“Y’all don’t have to make everything about everything…”
Time has a strange way of playing with the mind and blurring perceptions. For example, 24 years is effectively a quarter of a century, and while that sounds like a pretty vast swath of time, in reality it is merely a tiny speck in the grand scheme of the endless universe. To put it another way, as of the date of this episode in 2025, it has been the same amount of time (24 years) since 2001, which included the launch of Wikipedia, the September 11th attacks, and the very first iPod by Apple.
In keeping with the relativity of time, NATIVITY IN BLACK: A TRIBUTE TO BLACK SABBATH was released way back in 1994, a whopping 24 years after the groundbreaking eponymous debut from Birmingham’s founding fathers of metal. At that time, in the early 90’s, it seemed as if eons of time had elapsed from the release of Sabbath’s debut until the release of this tribute honoring the classic Ozzy era of Sabbath from the 1970’s and their collective contributions to the heavy metal canon.
To take the concept of time just a step further, Black Sabbath recently played their final concert (Back To The Beginning) 55 years after the release of their debut album, and it has now been 31 years (as of the date of this episode, in 2025) since the NATIVITY IN BLACK compilation was unleashed upon the metal world, featuring some real bangers from metal bands spanning a variety of subgenres that still holds up to this day.
Discover the proper pronunciation of names which you have been saying the wrong way you’re entire life, including “Schuldiner, Peart, and chimpanzee”, hear our latest movie pitch for Rob Zombie, and remember the reason for feeling uneasy when you are unable to “touch bottom” after you JOIN US as we dive in to the first compilation of Black Sabbath covers that was cheekily named after Bill Ward’s beard with NATIVITY IN BLACK: A TRIBUTE TO BLACK SABBATH.

#324 VENOM - INSIDE THE METAL - THE 80’s
Thursday Oct 30, 2025
Thursday Oct 30, 2025
“I had to watch it 3 or 4 times to finally get there…”
Ahhh, the 80’s. A time when people could actually afford to live, back when Taco Bell was both super cheap and equally delicious, horror movies were genuinely scary and often boasted incredibly “special” special effects, and terrified parents everywhere were completely “freaking the motherfrickin’ frick out” over heavy metal and the ensuing “Satanic Panic” that followed. (Remember, we’re talking about the 80’s here…)
“I kinda feel like Satan probably listens to Air Supply nonstop…or Gino Vanelli…”
Not to worry though, because Tipper Gore was on the case, going out of her way to ensure that the future prosperity of heavy metal would be secure forever with the PMRC seal of approval (PARENTAL ADVISORY – EXPLICIT CONTENT) plastered on the cover of everything that would be deemed essential listening.
Thanks to the diligent efforts and painstaking research of Tipper Gore and her Parents Music Resource Center, the PMRC lovingly crafted “The Filthy Fifteen” for American parents to ensure that their children would only be exposed to the finest audio artistry the heavy metal genre (and somehow, also Satan) had to offer. One of the bands included on that fateful list were the founders of black metal, VENOM (ironically, rated “O” … for “Obviously” …as in “Obviously, your kids should be listening to this!”).
Hailing from probably the fanciest, most upper crust sounding city in all of England, Newcastle upon Tyne’s 3-piece of evil VENOM came blasting out of the gates of hell with what would become the foundation for the black metal genre that would begin its ascent into heavy metal culture around the same time as thrash metal in the early 80’s, with a sound combining the rawness of Motorhead, the darkness of Sabbath, and the speed of thrash with an imagery reminiscent of KISS if they were actually satanists.
If Black Sabbath are ground zero for the formation of heavy metal as we know it, then VENOM is no doubt the Black Sabbath of the black metal genre. With a dark, detached creepiness that sounds like something recorded in an underground mausoleum, VENOM are the originators of extreme metal and were out in front, scaring the hell out of parents everywhere and delighting young and impressionable metalheads the world over.
Happy Halloween everyone!!! It’s time to celebrate spooky season the way we did back in the 80’s, by going through your kids trick-or-treat plunder and picking out all of that “good candy”. Prepare yourself for the latest outtake from The Angry Matt Podcast regarding the abolition of Daylight Savings Time, discover why “fist bumps and fisting are basically the same thing”, learn what “post mortis” actually means, and JOIN US for an “exploratory learning journey” as we go INSIDE THE METAL and review THE 80’s output of black metal pioneers VENOM.

#323 CORONER DISSONANCE THEORY Album Review
Thursday Oct 23, 2025
Thursday Oct 23, 2025
“You can understand everything he says…he’s much more pronunced.”
With Diego Rapacchietti, the “Swisstalian” timekeeper who replaced original drummer Marky “Marquis” Edelmann behind the kit, both Ron Broder (Ron Royce) and Tommy Vetterli (Tommy T. Baron), known collectively as Swiss thrash kings CORONER, have returned with DISSONANCE THEORY, the first new studio album featuring brand new material from the progressive thrash trio in over 30 years and the album which already has thrash fans worldwide shouting proclamations of Album of the Year.
Released on 10/17/2025, DISSONANCE THEORY is easily the finest thrash album in decades and may quite easily take the crown as CORONER’s magnum opus, a master work of progressive, technical thrash tempered with unmatched riffs, majestic solos, and a brilliantly engineered sonic vengeance where the drums, bass, and guitars each sit perfectly within the mix. It’s one of those albums that continues to impress exponentially with each subsequent listen and is, without question, a masterpiece, and an absolute joy to listen to.
“Just when you think all the riffs have been written…NOPE!”
Remember that the word for this episode is “texture” and JOIN US as we celebrate CORONER’s crowning achievement in thrash greatness with the unpredictably precise complexity of tech prog thrash genius, DISSONANCE THEORY.

#322 TYPE-O-NEGATIVE OCTOBER RUST Album Review
Thursday Oct 16, 2025
Thursday Oct 16, 2025
“That dude is Dracula, man…”
The entire month of October is Halloween. And you can’t do October without TYPE-O-NEGATIVE, as they are the official soundtrack to the month of Halloween.
Released August 20, 1996, OCTOBER RUST, their 4th studio album (or 3rd if you count “Origin of the Feces” as a “live” album, which we actually do, even though it’s technically not) is much more gothy, textured, and atmospheric than previous TYPE-O albums while still maintaining the same gothic, heavy, doom laden aesthetic of their previous albums, making it the perfect sonic representation of all things Halloween: vampires, werewolves, haunted houses, haunted relationships, hot bisexual goth girls who are into threesomes, bottles of red wine, and lonely forests bathed in the colorful, seasonal transformation that is autumn.
It's time to imagine Molly Ringwald dressed as a goth girl for Halloween as you feast your ears on the creepiest, evilest sounding keyboards in metal while summoning Bacchus (the god of wine and revelry and/or tits) to help prepare for this season’s “fistivities”.
Discover the actual definition of “zoanthropic paranoia”, find out what happens when you make a goth girl squirt, and learn about Peter Steele’s lesser known “nickname” when you JOIN US as we rrrrrrroll our R’s rrrrrrright on through creepy season with OCTOBER RUST.

#321 CORONER: Inside The METAL
Thursday Oct 09, 2025
Thursday Oct 09, 2025
“I didn’t do stink finger until sophomore year…”
Switzerland is known for a few things with holes in them, most notably their cheese (and quite possibly their chocolate). But the biggest hole Switzerland is known for (other than CERN) is the seemingly endless void between the last CORONER studio album (“Grin” in 1993) and their upcoming 2025 release “Dissonance Theory”, which makes the gap between Tool albums look like a couple of weeks by comparison.
As one of the most technically progressive, avant-garde thrash bands in the entirety of Metal, CORONER are the kings of odd time signatures, unusual chord shapes, and mathematically challenging riffs that set them apart from the rest of the pack, and we’re so glad they’re finally back!
Often called “the Rush of thrash metal”, most likely due to the incredible depth, musical complexity, and texture of music that a 3-piece band of their stature can deliver, CORONER doesn’t sound like anyone else in the thrash metal canon.
Discover the potentially dark traits shared by those with middle names who write in notebooks, understand the line of distinction between “a millionaire and a billionaire”, and find out why sex on Christmas Day ensures you’ll be celebrating birthdays “on the same day as Russell” when you JOIN US as we go INSIDE THE METAL with the best roadies Celtic Frost ever had, featuring Switzerland’s masters of techno thrash sorcery, CORONER.

#320 CORROSION OF CONFORMITY: WISEBLOOD Album Review
Thursday Oct 02, 2025
Thursday Oct 02, 2025
Released 10/15/1996, WISEBLOOD, the 5th studio album from CORROSION OF CONFORMITY, is the perfect soundtrack to October and everything that goes with it, including shag carpeting, wood paneling, and fresh greens.
Filled with driving metal riffs and all of the sonic textures that made the 70’s the best decade for music, the “Skynyrd Fried Sabbath” infused 70’s jam band stylings of WISEBLOOD evokes a “super-heavy fuzzy 70’s” vibe that pairs well with the flower of your choosing.
Go fix yourself a PB&J (or a P&BJ) sandwich, relish the privilege of getting a Senior Discount for looking like a wizard at The Chick-Fil-A of burgers, and remember that “pre-AIDS poon is the best kind” when you JOIN US for a dose of retro southern metal with CORROSION OF CONFORMITY and WISEBLOOD.

#319 CHRONICLES II pt 2: CHECK YOUR HEAD by BEASTIE BOYS
Thursday Sep 25, 2025
Thursday Sep 25, 2025
“Is that Richard Pryor?”
Released 04/21/1992, the 3rd official BEASTIE BOYS studio album, CHECK YOUR HEAD, is a genius title because this album is “all up in here” and is the perfect psychedelic ASMR accompaniment to justify your luxury headphone purchase.
While this episode is more than a little bit “off the reservation” we feel like with the right headphones and the right relaxers you’ll be in just the right mood to really enjoy it from beginning to end.
Loaded up with a wide variety of sonic textures, grooves, and more 70’s vibes than even Tarantino can shake a stick at (including the gratuitous use of Hammond B-3 keyboards and visions of wood paneled walls and orange shag carpeting), CHECK YOUR HEAD is the perfect album to make the trip back to 1974 “back when thunder sounded like thunder”.
Get ready for a Bunkerpoon ghost story regarding some paranormal activity captured during our recent Mastodon episode, find out what you’re NOT supposed to do when the red tide reaches the slippery shores of Snooch Gulch, remember that “Eerie Inhabitants 1988 thunder does not sound like 2025 thunder“ and JOIN US for CHRONICLES II: Part II – Off The Reservation with the BEASTIE BOYS and get ready to CHECK YOUR HEAD.

#318 CHRONICLES II pt 1: KISS DESTROYER
Thursday Sep 18, 2025
Thursday Sep 18, 2025
“In fairness, I guess if they didn’t have the make-up, what would they have? A different career?”
Released March 15, 1976, DESTROYER, the “iconic and mysterious” 4th studio album by KISS, was the first studio release after their breakthrough double live album ALIVE!, which chronicled their first 3 studio albums in a live concert setting and really brought the power and spectacle of the live KISS concert experience of the mid 1970’s to the masses.
Getting winded from tying your shoelaces is “the saddest thing about getting older” after coming to grips with the glaring realization that KISS just isn’t quite as awesome at middle age as it was upon hearing it for the first time in early childhood. But having said that, KISS was most definitely one hell of an exciting place to start one’s journey into the realm of metal.
We’re going to ask that you go ahead and lower any “Great Expectations” you may have had for this episode, because only a “fly by the seat of our balls kinda podcast” such as ours would dare to take on something like this.
Get ready for a “sobering moment”, remember that “Iconic” is the word of the episode, find out which Slayer album included “Fluoride Westone”, discover “how many people it takes to make KISS sound good”, and remember that “it’s nothing but 7’s” when you JOIN US for some “Rock and Roll Spiderman” as we embark on our trip through CHRONICLES II with PART I: the 4th studio album by “the hottest band in the land”, DESTROYER.
