058: Black Sabbath Deep Tracks from the First Six Albums
Thursday Oct 01, 2020
Thursday Oct 01, 2020
Back before corporations acquired (and systematically destroyed) rock radio by playing the same 10 songs on perpetual repeat into the dirt, radio disc jockeys used to actually have some control over their “playlists” and would sometimes throw on a song that wasn’t a normal rock radio favorite: maybe something that wasn’t a “hit single”, or something for which there was no “music video”; something longer, something unusual, something off the beaten path: we call these Deep Cuts. That’s what us Metal Nerds call “The Good Stuff”. And when it comes to Black Sabbath, it’s ALL Good Stuff!!!
There’s just one problem: because WE THE NERDS here at Metal Nerdery are already so intimately familiar with what shall be henceforth known as “The First Six”, it was kind of a challenge for us to each pick our favorite 6 deep cuts from The First Six Black Sabbath albums. There were a few that overlapped on our respective listicles but we tried to go as deeply as we could to give those of you who are only familiar with side 1 of ‘Paranoid’ a nice sampling of what we call “That GOOD Sabbath”.
JOIN US after you’ve finished your bowl (of breakfast cereal) as we discuss our favorite “deep cuts” from our favorite first 6 albums by our favorite First Godfathers of Metal, Black Sabbath. Also check out our live stream of this episode on our Facebook page and find out whether or not Russ will show his “Man Tetons” on Facebook.

057: Sabbat Dreamweaver Album Dive
Friday Sep 25, 2020
Friday Sep 25, 2020
One of the key components of classic thrash during the glory years was riffs; namely “how many can you fit into one song?” (sort of the same logic used in many of today’s finer adult motion picture feature presentations). Sabbat answers that question: ALL of them!! This was new territory for some of us as we weren’t as familiar with Sabbat back in the day and didn’t have access to it (though it if we did, we would have certainly bought it).
JOIN US after you fix your favorite relaxer and cancel the rest of your afternoon as we dive into Sabbat’s Dreamweaver and talk about the story, the plot, the riffs and that creepy ass careless demon whisper.

055: Power Trip HAIL to Riley Gale and Power Trip
Thursday Sep 10, 2020
Thursday Sep 10, 2020
Often in life, we don’t discover the truth about something until it’s too late. And the truth about Powertrip is that they are an anachronistic anomaly in Thrash Metal: yeah they may have come to power in the late 2000’s and 2010’s but they would sound right at home in the late 1980’s and early 1990’s era of Thrash Metal that we hold so dear. Sadly, some of us are only just now discovering the band for the very first time upon learning of the unfortunate and untimely passing of Powertrip frontman, Riley Gale.
So, prepare your favorite relaxer, raise a glass, raise your horns, and JOIN US as we honor Riley Gale and Powertrip and their phenomenal contributions (thus far) to the mighty pantheon of Thrash Metal.

054: Metallica Garage Days Re-Revisited 5.98 EP Album Dive
Thursday Sep 03, 2020
Thursday Sep 03, 2020
Ahh, 1987. Before Bob Rock and The Black Album were even imagined, before Metallica cut their hair and gave us multiple LOADS, there were “The Garage Days”.
After the devastating and tragic loss of bassist Cliff Burton in 1986, Metallica had to find a suitable replacement bassist to help the band continue forward on their quest for worldwide Thrash Metal domination. Enter Jason Newsted. Enter some new blood. Enter Night… (Wait, it’s too early for that…we’re not there yet, so let it keep ringing out, just let it ring out. Okay turn it off now).
So JOIN US after you prepare and consume (and prepare and consume some more of) your favorite relaxer and block out some (most/all) of your day as we go through the cheapest and arguably one of the best Thrash Metal EP’s ever released: Metallica’s Garage Days Re-Revisited.

053: Thrash Metal History '81 - '87
Thursday Aug 27, 2020
Thursday Aug 27, 2020
Ahhh, the 80’s and the early days of Thrash Metal. A time of exponential growth in the genre that would become THE most powerful and glorious force in the entirety of the known Thrash Metalverse.
The speed, the riffs, ALL of it: The 1980’s gave us the birth (and further evolutionary refinement) of Thrash Metal. If you’re reading this, then you already know that we here at Metal Nerdery LOVE THRASH and would delight in being able to listen to, play and/or talk about Thrash all the time! But in order to know where you’re headed, you’ve got to first take a look back at where you’ve been. (And thus, we have: backshadowing, or as they say in France: baqueshadeauxing).
So go ahead and stop whatever you’re doing (not that important), prepare a double dose of your favorite relaxer (actually extremely important), block out some time (call it “work life balance” or “a client meeting”) and JOIN US as we go through Discogs.com’s Top 50 Early Thrash Metal Albums listicle and gain some insight as to the evolution of Thrash Metal throughout the 80’s. Songs, albums, artwork, record and tape shops, shows…time to jump in the Metal Nerdery Time Tunnel and go back to The Golden Age of Thrash: time to go back to the 19motherfucking80’s!!

Thursday Aug 20, 2020
“What happens when fresh green collides with Metal? Duuuuuuuuuuude…”
That’s right! Stoner Metal. Doom Metal. Sludge Metal. The label doesn’t really matter. What DOES really matter is how fantastically heavy & awesome ALL of it is!!
On this, Metal Nerdery’s Stoner Metal Showcase, Vol.1, we check out some of the early, influential Stoner & Doom Metal bands (*cough* Black Sabbath *more coughing*), discuss the differences between the different subgenres, and talk about anything and everything that may have relevant tangentionalality to Stoner Metal.
So, roll another bowl, prepare your favorite relaxer, crank up the lava lamps and black lights and JOIN US for a trip down the rabbit hole where everything is wood paneling, shag carpeting and incredibly heavy, fuzzy, stony rifftastical goodness.

051: Metallica Ride The Lightning Album Dive
Thursday Aug 13, 2020
Thursday Aug 13, 2020
Any metalhead who hears the phrase “80’s era Metallica” will IMMEDIATELY conjure visions of James, Lars, Kirk and Cliff (R.I.P.) and be transported back to the days of yore, back before Metallica was a household name, back before they were part of The Big Four of Thrash Metal Royalty, back before Master of Puppets was even a “thought”. Back to 1984 and the badassness of Ride The Lightning.
Ride The Lightning, Metallica’s 2nd album is, without a doubt, one of THE most glorious sophomore SLAMS (not slumps) in Metal history (like right up there with Paranoid and Vulgar Display of Power). Given that it’s recently celebrated its 36th anniversary, we here at Metal Nerdery HQ felt that it was time to DIVE in a bit further to this thrashsterpiece and give it the Metal Nerdery Treatment.
So prepare your favorite relaxer and JOIN US as we go back to the Days of Yore (let’s call it Pre-Puppets-Thrash-Core) and discuss some of the trivia associated with the album, go through some of the tracks, and address how hilarious “misheard lyrics” can be.

049: Getting to know your hosts Metal Nerdery Top Fans Shout Outs and more
Thursday Jul 30, 2020
Thursday Jul 30, 2020
Getting to know a fellow Metalhead is a lot like dating: you have to ask the right questions to see if THEIR Metal is in alignment with YOUR Metal.
So, we decided it’d be fun to give everyone a more intimate view of what drives the Metal Nerdery magic by addressing some basic “Getting to Know You” style questions.
For example:
What’s the word about the Metal Nerdery nerds?
What is their backstory as it relates to Metal?
And for the love of Tony Iommi and all things Metal, WTF are ‘fart ghosts’?
So prepare (and enjoy) your favorite relaxer, tune out the outside world (maybe schedule a “lunch meeting” to block out your calendar) and JOIN US as we address the burning questions that EVERY Metalhead should be asking EVERY OTHER Metalhead across the entire planet!
