064: ACDC Side 1 - Bon Scott Years
Thursday Nov 12, 2020
Thursday Nov 12, 2020
Akka Dakka. If you’re from Australia, then you already know what this means (and are probably shocked that more people don’t know what this means). If you’re NOT from Australia, then you know them by their non-Aussie moniker: AC/DC (and now, through the magic of reading, you know the meaning of BOLTH!).
On this episode, we’re discussing Side 1 of AC/DC: The Bon Scott side. The beginnings of a band that would forever change the landscape of Rock and Metal with high-energy, killer riffs, face melting guitar solos and Angus Young’s nearly perpetual headbanging (which is enough proof to confirm that AC/DC is, without a doubt, METAL!!).
Prepare your favorite relaxer, “Power Up” (Sorry, I couldn’t help meself) and JOIN US as we talk about the band from “Down Under” that brought a new kind of swagger, sleaze, and BALLS (Big ones too!) to the pantheon of Heavy Metal.

063: Black Sabbath Paranoid
Thursday Nov 05, 2020
Thursday Nov 05, 2020
One thing this merry band of Metal Nerderers will agree on: we LOVE us some Black Sabbath! And with fall being the quintessentially ideal season for Sabbath (and with Witches Night right around the corner), we felt it was the perfect time to jump deep into the ultra-creepy end and get into the brutally heavy modern day classic that really freaked people out a half a century ago in 1970 (!): Black Sabbath’s “Paranoid”.
Anytime we get to talk about Black Sabbath, it’s always a good time! It’s the fall, so take a get-ready pill, prepare your favorite relaxer, shut out the rest of the world for a while while you enjoy said relaxer and JOIN US as we head back to 1970, back to dark wood paneling and orange shag carpeting and back to a time when the darkest, heaviest metal band on earth was about to completely change the game with an album that would go down in history as one of the finest (if not also one of THE most critically important) moments in ALL of metal.

061: Can't Be LOUD Enough Vol. II
Thursday Oct 22, 2020
Thursday Oct 22, 2020
We here at Metal Nerdery live by a few “rules”: Our Trust is in Black Sabbath and Slayer, Pantera was the Metallica of the 90’s and some songs, albums AND/OR bands simply CAN’T BE LOUD ENOUGH!! (sorry, that’s the text representation of turning everything up to 11 and SCREAMING IN CYBERSPACE!).
We were all over the road and had a lot of fun with this one and dug into all kinds of incredible tracks that need to be ‘LOUDER’ (isn’t it obvious?). We actually got into some really obscure, old school thrash stuff, some super obvious classics that CBLE and some newer stuff as well (and perhaps even stuff that, while not “overtly” Metal, most definitely belongs on the CBLE lysticle).
So, enjoy your favorite relaxers, put on your headphones, OR put in your earbuds, crank that volume to 101 and JOIN US for Volume 2 of Metal Nerdery’s Can’t Be Loud Enough series.

060: Eddie Van Halen Tribute
Thursday Oct 15, 2020
Thursday Oct 15, 2020
“Where were YOU when you heard the news…?”
No one will EVER forget the day that Eddie Van Halen left this world. And the reason we will never forget is because Eddie Van Halen CHANGED this world in such an incredibly profound (and incredibly METAL) way that he can only be described as unforgettable. There have been many copycats and imitators over the years, but to paraphrase from The Highlander: “There Can Be Only ONE Eddie Van Halen!”
JOIN US as we pay tribute to the GREATEST, most innovative and un-orthodoxically BRILLIANT guitarist to have ever blessed music: Mr. Edward Lodewjik Van Halen.

059: Pantera Far Beyond Driven Album Dive
Thursday Oct 08, 2020
Thursday Oct 08, 2020
Pantera had a gift for outdoing themselves with every song and every album. Just when you thought it couldn’t possibly be any heavier, they come around the corner and prove you wrong. FAR BEYOND DRIVEN, Pantera’s 3rd release (post Power Metal) blends the intensity and thrashy groove of Vulgar with the aggression and brutal heaviness of Trendkill. (No wonder it went to Number 1!!!)
JOIN US as we dive in, talk about the tracks, the production, the heaviness and the vulgar vulgarity that we all know and love courtesy of the metal band that OWNED heavy music in the 1990’s.

058: Black Sabbath Deep Tracks from the First Six Albums
Thursday Oct 01, 2020
Thursday Oct 01, 2020
Back before corporations acquired (and systematically destroyed) rock radio by playing the same 10 songs on perpetual repeat into the dirt, radio disc jockeys used to actually have some control over their “playlists” and would sometimes throw on a song that wasn’t a normal rock radio favorite: maybe something that wasn’t a “hit single”, or something for which there was no “music video”; something longer, something unusual, something off the beaten path: we call these Deep Cuts. That’s what us Metal Nerds call “The Good Stuff”. And when it comes to Black Sabbath, it’s ALL Good Stuff!!!
There’s just one problem: because WE THE NERDS here at Metal Nerdery are already so intimately familiar with what shall be henceforth known as “The First Six”, it was kind of a challenge for us to each pick our favorite 6 deep cuts from The First Six Black Sabbath albums. There were a few that overlapped on our respective listicles but we tried to go as deeply as we could to give those of you who are only familiar with side 1 of ‘Paranoid’ a nice sampling of what we call “That GOOD Sabbath”.
JOIN US after you’ve finished your bowl (of breakfast cereal) as we discuss our favorite “deep cuts” from our favorite first 6 albums by our favorite First Godfathers of Metal, Black Sabbath. Also check out our live stream of this episode on our Facebook page and find out whether or not Russ will show his “Man Tetons” on Facebook.

057: Sabbat Dreamweaver Album Dive
Friday Sep 25, 2020
Friday Sep 25, 2020
One of the key components of classic thrash during the glory years was riffs; namely “how many can you fit into one song?” (sort of the same logic used in many of today’s finer adult motion picture feature presentations). Sabbat answers that question: ALL of them!! This was new territory for some of us as we weren’t as familiar with Sabbat back in the day and didn’t have access to it (though it if we did, we would have certainly bought it).
JOIN US after you fix your favorite relaxer and cancel the rest of your afternoon as we dive into Sabbat’s Dreamweaver and talk about the story, the plot, the riffs and that creepy ass careless demon whisper.

055: Power Trip HAIL to Riley Gale and Power Trip
Thursday Sep 10, 2020
Thursday Sep 10, 2020
Often in life, we don’t discover the truth about something until it’s too late. And the truth about Powertrip is that they are an anachronistic anomaly in Thrash Metal: yeah they may have come to power in the late 2000’s and 2010’s but they would sound right at home in the late 1980’s and early 1990’s era of Thrash Metal that we hold so dear. Sadly, some of us are only just now discovering the band for the very first time upon learning of the unfortunate and untimely passing of Powertrip frontman, Riley Gale.
So, prepare your favorite relaxer, raise a glass, raise your horns, and JOIN US as we honor Riley Gale and Powertrip and their phenomenal contributions (thus far) to the mighty pantheon of Thrash Metal.
