070: Down II Album Dive
Thursday Dec 24, 2020
Thursday Dec 24, 2020
There’s something downright mysterious about DOWN II. Something about the vibe of the album sounds like it was recorded and produced by Roger Bain in some haunted, abandoned church in an alternate dimension during the early 1970’s and then teleported back to 2002 for a boost in production value and loudness thanks to the generous spell of a wizard who loves Metal.
But that’s not what happened.
No, there was something else that amplified and enhancified the mystique presented on DOWN’s sophomore effort DOWN II: A Bustle In Your Hedgerow. Something more organic, more natural, and even more mystical and powerful than interdimensional teleportation and wizards:
The swamplands of Louisiana, home to NODFERATU’S LAIR!
JOIN US (in an alternate dimension. Yeah, you’re gonna need a LOT of relaxers…) as we dive into the 2nd DOWN album and marvel at their uncanny ability to create the most delicious Skynyrd Fried Sabbath Crunch Casserole (with Riff Gravy) platter you’ve EVER experienced in your life.

069: Tribute to Dime
Thursday Dec 17, 2020
Thursday Dec 17, 2020
I awoke on December 8th and felt a little “off”. It felt heavy. Oppressive. Like a spiritual hangover. And then I remembered why…
16 years before was the day that we would forever mourn the loss of one of THE G.O.A.T.’s of Metal’s current generation: our modern-day Riff Lord that we know and love (and HAIL!) as Dimebag (Diamond) Darrell, or simply: DIME!
DIME was a force to be reckoned with in Metal, he could do it ALL! Killer intros, killer riffs, killer solos…what’s NOT to LIKE!?
ALL Killer, NO Filler! It’s the ONLY way that dude rolled.
So tell your boss you’ll be “meditating” for the next hour or so (technically that’s true), fix yourself a Black Tooth Grin (or eight; whatever feels right for you), slice & dice & roll another bowl of your favorite relaxer (because why wouldn’t you?) and JOIN US for this edition of Metal Nerdery’s Memorable Moments in Metal with DIME as we listen back to some of the highlights from his career with Pantera and discuss some of our favorite moments of “Power Metal Magic” (sorry. Okay, I’ll turn it off now…) from our favorite thrashtastical power groove shredder from Texas.

Thursday Dec 10, 2020
Back in the day, there were certain criteria on the back of every cassette and compact disc that were critical to ensure that the piece of thrashtastical goodness you were about to consume was WORTHY of your entertainment dollar.
One of the most important criteria to look for was the record label.
Back then, the independent record labels were what really helped to launch the entire Thrash Metal movement and community, thanks in large part to the power of networking (we’re talking pre-internet, pre-Black album kinda networking here).
You would know within a fraction of a second if the album was of quality or not. If it said COMBAT Records anywhere on it, there was no question: it was DEFINITELY quality, and DEFINITELY worthy of your investment.
So go back through your old cassette tape and compact disc collection, put on one of your old black tour shirts from high school, roll another bowl of your favorite relaxer and JOIN US as we talk about COMBAT Records, their recent rebirth, and go through some of the COMBAT roster from back in the glory days of Thrash (as well as check out some of the new COMBAT artists).

Sometimes you have to be reminded of history to understand bolth where you come from and why things are the way they are today. Thanks to Brian Slagel and Metal Blade Records various Metal Massacre compilations, we’re able to gain a greater glimpse of the Metal landscape as it was at that time; a sound that was slowly transitioning from hard rock into what we know and love as heavy metal.

066: 1985 Year In Metal
Thursday Nov 26, 2020
Thursday Nov 26, 2020
We did it again; we kept it loose (which was, like, totally awesome, but whatever…). We had initially intended on targeting 1985 Thrash Metal but as it turns out, there was an absolute abundance of killer metal albums from all across the metal continuum released during 1985 that went beyond Thrash, so we decided to include those as part of the discussion as well.
So go roll another bowl of your favorite relaxer, pretend your laptop and cell phone don’t exist for the next hour, fire up the DeLorean and JOIN US for a look back at Metal from the Year of our Riff Lord, 1985.

065: Top 6 Slayer Songs
Thursday Nov 19, 2020
Thursday Nov 19, 2020
So, we apologize in advance for lying. We were “planning” to pick our respective Top 6 Favorite Fucking Slayer Tracks. One problem: it’s REALLY hard for us to nail down our personal “Final Six” Favorite Fucking Slayer tracks, because quite frankly, it’s Fucking Slayer. Which means that we could do this episode in a million different ways in a million different multiverses across a million different dimensions and they would ALL be unique. And they would ALL be awesome. Because they would ALL have one thing in common: (you already know…) FUCKING SLAYER!!
Having said that, we DID try to nail down what we’ll call the “rough draft” of our respective Top “Final Six” favorite FUCKING SLAYER tracks. As usual, anytime we’re talking about FUCKING SLAYER, you KNOW it’s gonna be a good time. We did actually get into the logic that would ultimately drive our Top Favorite Final Six, but if we’re being honest, it kinda turned into an orgy of Fucking Slayer. (I know, right? Guess what? There’s absolutely NOTHING wrong with that. Ever! In ANY dimension or multiverse!! Especially THIS one!).
So turn on your “out of office” notification (technically, that’s NOT lying), roll another bowl of your favorite relaxer (“work/life balance requires more life and less work”), maybe throw in a few shots of fun (just for fun, and just because) and JOIN US as we try our gosh darndest to construct our list of our Top “Final Six” Favorite Fucking Slayer tracks.
PLUS, enjoy the complete left turn we took later in the show that still managed to tie everything together and stay 100% within the acceptable realm of relative tangentionalalityismness as it relates to bolth this particular episode ass swell as The Mighty and Powerful Fucking Slayer.

Thursday Nov 12, 2020
Thursday Nov 12, 2020
Akka Dakka. If you’re from Australia, then you already know what this means (and are probably shocked that more people don’t know what this means). If you’re NOT from Australia, then you know them by their non-Aussie moniker: AC/DC (and now, through the magic of reading, you know the meaning of BOLTH!).
On this episode, we’re discussing Side 1 of AC/DC: The Bon Scott side. The beginnings of a band that would forever change the landscape of Rock and Metal with high-energy, killer riffs, face melting guitar solos and Angus Young’s nearly perpetual headbanging (which is enough proof to confirm that AC/DC is, without a doubt, METAL!!).
Prepare your favorite relaxer, “Power Up” (Sorry, I couldn’t help meself) and JOIN US as we talk about the band from “Down Under” that brought a new kind of swagger, sleaze, and BALLS (Big ones too!) to the pantheon of Heavy Metal.

063: Black Sabbath Paranoid
Thursday Nov 05, 2020
Thursday Nov 05, 2020
One thing this merry band of Metal Nerderers will agree on: we LOVE us some Black Sabbath! And with fall being the quintessentially ideal season for Sabbath (and with Witches Night right around the corner), we felt it was the perfect time to jump deep into the ultra-creepy end and get into the brutally heavy modern day classic that really freaked people out a half a century ago in 1970 (!): Black Sabbath’s “Paranoid”.
Anytime we get to talk about Black Sabbath, it’s always a good time! It’s the fall, so take a get-ready pill, prepare your favorite relaxer, shut out the rest of the world for a while while you enjoy said relaxer and JOIN US as we head back to 1970, back to dark wood paneling and orange shag carpeting and back to a time when the darkest, heaviest metal band on earth was about to completely change the game with an album that would go down in history as one of the finest (if not also one of THE most critically important) moments in ALL of metal.

061: Can't Be LOUD Enough Vol. II
Thursday Oct 22, 2020
Thursday Oct 22, 2020
We here at Metal Nerdery live by a few “rules”: Our Trust is in Black Sabbath and Slayer, Pantera was the Metallica of the 90’s and some songs, albums AND/OR bands simply CAN’T BE LOUD ENOUGH!! (sorry, that’s the text representation of turning everything up to 11 and SCREAMING IN CYBERSPACE!).
We were all over the road and had a lot of fun with this one and dug into all kinds of incredible tracks that need to be ‘LOUDER’ (isn’t it obvious?). We actually got into some really obscure, old school thrash stuff, some super obvious classics that CBLE and some newer stuff as well (and perhaps even stuff that, while not “overtly” Metal, most definitely belongs on the CBLE lysticle).
So, enjoy your favorite relaxers, put on your headphones, OR put in your earbuds, crank that volume to 101 and JOIN US for Volume 2 of Metal Nerdery’s Can’t Be Loud Enough series.
