With the advent of the NWOBHM and the IRON MAIDEN (aka: the genre definers; they’re bassically the Black Sabbath of NWOBHM), the Metal landscape was starting to take on a different dimension; with increased aggression, speed, and heaviness (musically and lyrically) while simultaneously weaving in twin guitar harmonies, a greater sense of melody, prog-rock style orchestration and arrangement to create what can only be described thusly: IRON MAIDEN!

Ever since The Almighty Iommi first blessed the world with his glorious presence vis-à-vis Black Sabbath in 1970 (and through the incredibly prudent use of the tritone), RIFFS have been continuously evolving throughout Metal, becoming ever more ambitious, grandiose and complexicated with ever increasing precision, evilocity, and gravity punishing heaviness.
RIFFS are the essence. RIFFS are the hook. RIFFS are the core (ha-ha) fundamental building blocks of ALL Metal, with likely as many RIFFS in the known Metalverse as there are stars in the known Universe. And NO, that’s NOT “science” or astronomology or whatever, it’s just a fact. (Plus, or minus a few billion trillion…)
In summation: without RIFFS, there would be no Metal!

It feels like being back in the basement, rehearsing a set for an upcoming gig. For anyone who’s ever been in a band, one of the first things you learn is how to play someone else’s songs. Covers. There is not a Metal band in existence that has NEVER played cover songs by their favorite artists at some point in their careers. The awesome thing about covers is the “interpretation”, much in the same way a chef may “interpret” a particular dish (let’s say fried chicken; wow that actually sounds delicious, doesn’t it? Or maybe a fried chicken burrito? HFS, I think I’m a genius, as that too also sounds delicious! Follow me for more subliminal messages regarding food. Oh yeah…sorry (ahem)) ‘an artist may choose…’ In 3…2…1…), an artist may choose to replicate the song precisely or “reimagine” the song, making it completely something of their own “vision”. “Terminal, what disease?…”
Anytime Overkill’s 1989 Thrash masterpiece “The Years of Decay” comes on (henceforth also to be known in the realm of Metal Nerdery as “The YOD”, pronounced like nod, not like yode), IMMEDIATELY you can hear neon green and visualize an omnipresent, crazy, winged, bat-skull (or is it skull-bat?) flying through the entirety of the sonic landscape, like Overkill’s own quality control.
“I’ve learned to deal with the absurd…”
“The YOD” was the pinnacle of Overkill’s sound during the late 80’s, streamlining and further refining the East Coast Thrash sound they had developed over their three previous albums to create not only one of the finest albums of their career but also one of the finest albums in all of Thrash Metal! No one articulated the sheer attitude, aggression and general New Jerseyan irritation and angst of the 80’s quite like Overkill. All summed up in a single, succinct directive; a kind of “single finger salute” if you will. (If you know, you know…).

“Sooner or later, everything old is new again…” – Stephen King
While we here at Metal Nerdery feel that ALL Metal is important and plays a part in the grand design of the Metal Multiverse, our favorite is Thrash, and many of the favorite bands of many of our favorite bands were all part of The Movement In Metal That Became The New Wave of British Heavy Metal (or NWOBHM for short. Or “technically” TMIMTBTNWOBHM for long).

So, let’s break it down: the Thrash Metal bands of the 80’s (the most well-known being Metallica) picked up the torch from the original NWOBHM bands of the late 70’s and early 80’s (the most well-known being Iron Maiden) to create the Original Wave of Old School Thrash Metal (OWOOSTM, or simply: Thrash). We’ve already sampled some of the New Wave of Old School Thrash Metal (NWOOSTM), which is like a reimagining of the OWOOSTM aesthetic. So now we’re pleased to sample some of the NWOTHM (which, if you’re doing the math correctly, seems like it should technically be relabeled the New Wave of NWOBHM…or (ahem) NWONWOBHM).
