After grunge all but sucked the life out of thrash while at its zenith in the early 90’s (I mean, it “didn’t”, but it also kinda “did”, y’know?), the landscape had been forever altered and “thrash metal” as we previously knew it had been forever transformed, now with greater attention to groove, swagger, and swing (and let’s not forget those sublimely sick breakdowns! HFS!!!).
While still employing the same rifftactical utility belt genius he used in his former band VIO-LENCE, thrash master ROBB FLYNN updated his first wave thrash palette with the groove and raw attitude of the day to forge his own aggro-groove-thrash creation with MACHINE HEAD, blazing a path forward into the “next wave” of American thrash like a welder’s torch set to 11.

Such respect and reverence are deserving of genre defining prodigies and artists who are often light-years ahead of their own time. “The Godfather of Death Metal” helped spawn an entirely new genre of metal, blending all of the best elements of progressive and thrash metal while simultaneously intensifying the technicality, musicianship, and profound, thought-provoking lyricism (already inherently part of bolth genres) with beautifully precise craftsmanship and flawlessly executed production. PANTERA is one of the few bands to raise the bar consistently and continuously with each album. THE GREAT SOUTHERN TRENDKILL is the most “everything” Pantera album. It’s easily the angriest, heaviest, darkest Pantera album EVER and is, most indubitably, the “kick in the jimmy” that the Metal world was in dire need of in the mid 90’s after grunge and alternative music effectively “declawed” Metal and turned it (for the most part) into some watered down, tame, “domesticated” shadow of its former self.

The thought of anything obscure with regard to Thrash immediately provokes thoughts of the Mall Days of Yore; a time before the existence of internet search engines, music streaming services or even social media bots to recommend bands or albums based on prior purchases. A time when word of mouth within the Thrash community held sway over a metalhead’s purchasing power.
“Blurred visions, sanity obscure…” - BELIEVER
So many hours spent, flipping through ALL of those records, tapes and CDs in the Metal sections of every record store, looking for that one band…that one album. That one obscure, impossible to find recording you’ve only heard others talk about with the utmost reverence as if it were something sacred (because it was). And then, as if guided by providence, you find it. You can’t believe your luck. There it is…
